Involve Students in Decision-Making Processes: How the Irvine Public Schools Foundation Can Help

The Irvine Public Schools Foundation (IPSF) is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of every student in every school. To achieve this goal, IPSF provides programs, raises funds, and unites the community in support of educational excellence. Under the leadership of Neda, IPSF has earned a reputation as California's leading educational foundation. Recently, IPSF partnered with the Angels Baseball Foundation to organize the 6th edition of their program.

This program was designed to support mental health initiatives across the Irvine Unified School District and was called the Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP). ELOP provides students with enrichment activities and is monitored and instructed by successful candidates. Additionally, Wood takes advantage of the eight days that California allows schools to be out of school hours so that teachers can meet and plan for school improvement. In order for schools to become independent from relying solely on the principal, all members of the administrative, teaching and classified staff, as well as some parents, must actively participate in the formal organization.

This means that informal or ad hoc ways of doing things must be replaced with traditions that are inviolable. To do this, schools must draw from a talent pool of teachers who have experienced the process and intend to take on leadership roles in their schools. The issue of time is especially pertinent in large middle and high schools because they are more complex than elementary schools and require more structured planning time to approach their problems from different angles. What has been missing is an adequate consideration of the essential relationship between structure, time and culture.
